Celebrate! New Adventure!

October 12 and 13

Yesterday (10/11/11) we celebrated Sandy's 72nd birthday. Paige and Maddie made a cake and Zach a card. Vince took us all out for pizza at Giordano's.

Today we did our final packup, walked Nellie, and enjoyed a leftover piece of cake. Left "home" at 1:30, Nick, the cab driver, had us at the International terminal by 2:15.

On-time departure, 4:35. Our SAS flight arrived in Milan at noon on Oct 13, having crossed 7 time zones. We taxied to our Airbnb in a great older neighborhood on via Monte Rosa.

Fabio met us there and gave us a brief idea of how get around using the Metro. Milan is a big city, 2M people. The weather is perfect, sunny in the 70s.

Our first visit this afternoon is to the Castello, the surrounding parks, and the Arch of Peace. After Napoleon conquered Italy he built this area in Milan that resembles the Champs Élysées. He erected in Milan the Peace Arch, and built the Triumph Arch in Paris.

The Castle is one of the most significant monuments of the city. The large circular fountain in front is a gathering place for locals and tourists. The park and Peace Arch are behind the Castle. The entire space is many acres.

We're both trying to keep awake, walking and eating. We ate an early dinner at a sidewalk cafe and played a game of cribbage (Sandy won, but just barely.)

Early to bed tonight for sure.
